High-pressure phases of the alkali metals

چکیده
A series of recent x-ray diffraction experiments carried out by scientists from the Max-PlanckInstitut FKF in Stuttgart and the ESRF in Grenoble on elemental semiconductors and alkali metals under high pressure have provided new insight in pressure induced structural transformations. New structures have been identified, and some of these have surprising similarities, such as low coordination numbers. The new lithium phase, Li-cI16, which has a cubic structure with 16 atoms in the cubic cell, has not been found for any other element. Theoretical studies, some of which are described here, using ab initio methods to calculate electronic and structural properties provide theoretical support for the analysis of these experiments, and may also serve to predict new properties, such as superconductivity, of the materials when exposed to very high pressures.

Superconductivity in room-temperature stable electride and high-pressure phases of alkali metals.
S-band metals such as alkali and alkaline earth metals do not undergo a superconducting transition (SCT) at ambient pressure, but their high-pressure phases do. By contrast, room-temperature stable electride [Ca(24)Al(28)O(64)](4+)⋅4e(-) (C12A7:e(-)) in which anionic electrons in the crystallographic sub-nanometer-size cages have high s-character exhibits SCT at 0.2-0.4 K at ambient pressure. I...
متن کاملPredicted pressure-induced s-band ferromagnetism in alkali metals.
First-principles density-functional-theory calculations show that compression of alkali metals stabilizes open structures with localized interstitial electrons which may exhibit a Stoner-type instability towards ferromagnetism. We find ferromagnetic phases of the lithium-IV-type, simple cubic, and simple hexagonal structures in the heavier alkali metals, which may be described as s-band ferroma...
متن کاملTheoretical predictions of novel potassium chloride phases under pressure.
Evolutionary structure searches predict two hitherto unknown phases of KCl that are the most stable in the pressure regime of 200-600 GPa. I41/amd-KCl, which has the lowest enthalpy between ∼200-350 GPa, can be thought of as being composed of two three-connected nets. This structure can be compared with that of the Cs-IV electride (Cs(+)e(-)): the potassium ions assume the positions of the cesi...
متن کاملSuperconductivity in the alkali metals
At ambient pressure there are 29 elemental superconductors in the periodic table, none of which is an alkali metal. The first alkali metal to become superconducting under high pressure is Cs followed years later by Li. Alkali metals are believed to be exemplary free-electron systems. The fact that an alkali metal becomes superconducting at all is surprising and is a result of the fact that unde...
متن کاملExotic high pressure behavior of light alkali metals, lithium and sodium
At ambient conditions, lithium and sodium behave as free-electron metals and adopt highly symmetric close-packed structures. Under high pressure, however, these simple metals undergo a series of complex phase transitions to structures of lower symmetry, along with significant changes of their physical properties. In this review we provide a comprehensive description of these light alkali metals...
